Choosing the right wine for your holiday foods. Thomas Jefferson, a lover of both food and wine, once said "Good wine is a necessity of life." This is true throughout the year but takes on greater significance during the holiday season when special meals and get-togethers are the norm. If you often wonder what wine is best suited to your holiday menu join for this special pairing. We'll pair five wines with foods that are often served for Christmas and New Year's celebrations. In addition, Mike Show More...will answer your questions about what might pair best with your favorite foods. Menu: Caramelized Chili and Spice Nuts; Roasted Pear, Onion and Gruyere Strudels; Seven Fishes Stew with Parmesan Crostini; Roasted Beef Filet with Whipped Potatoes and Tomato Demi-glace Sauce; Deep Dish Apple Tarts with Cinnamon Ice Cream.

About the Class: Our wine pairing classes provide participants with a better understanding of how particular wines can enhance the flavors in different foods. In addition to tasting the selected pairings, the group will see how each of the dishes is prepared. As with our wine tastings, we'll cover the region and producer of each wine. The classes are taught by Mike Conti, President/Wine Educator of From Stem to Learn Mike has over 32 years in the hospitality and education industries. The National Canal Museum will debut an exhibition of the works of folk artist Frank "WYSO" Wysochansky (1915-1994) on Saturday, November 10 as part of Show More...its participation in the regionwide 250th anniversary celebration of the first documented use of anthracite coal in America.

The exhibition Frank Wyso: The Coal Connection will showcase some of the Blakely, PA native's compelling work depicting the lives of coal miners. Having lost his father in a mining accident, WYSO was familiar with the harsh realities of coal miners' lives, as well as the strong community ties these dangerous conditions fostered. It was this intimate knowledge which would influence his art throughout his life. His evocative paintings and sculptures document the tools and working conditions of the anthracite coal mines of Northeastern Pennsylvania and the modest means and lifestyles of the coal miners' families.

On Saturday, Nov. 10, at 1:00 p.m., Steven Lichak of the WYSO Foundation will give a talk on the eccentric life and innovative works of WYSO at the National Canal Museum to celebrate the exhibition's opening. Family-friendly art activities held in the museum's Welcome Center will also allow children and adults to explore WYSO's artistic techniques. The talk and activities are free as part of museum admission.
Other upcoming events include a book signing and talk by Vince Hydro, author of the Mauch Chunk Switchback, on Saturday, Nov. 17 at 3:00 pm and a holiday swag-making workshop with Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor Executive Director Elissa Garofalo on Sunday, Nov. 18 from 1:00-3:30 p.m. The museum's other special exhibition, Powering America: Pennyslvania's Anthracite Railroads, also continues through Dec. 23. Frank Hyder, who splits his time between Philadelphia and Miami, has become known for working across a variety of media. His paintings and sculpture have Show More...been widely exhibited in venues such as the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art's Museum of American Art, the Carnegie Museum in California, the La Salle Museum of Art in Philadelphia, and the National Museum of Catholic Art and History in New York among others. Hyder's fascination with the public sphere has manifested in a multimedia experience titled The Janis Project. Begun in 2015 and still continuing today, Hyder has created over a dozen large-scale, double-faced inflatable sculptures of heads. Hyder states of The Janis Project that each head, "which at once references Moai of Easter Island, Olmec heads and, the ancient Roman god of new endeavors, at the same time has its roots in street art and inflatable toys...Janis carries a message of equality and good will and dares to step out of the normal world of Art museums or Art Galleries to be among us. Made of resilient nylon and paint, Janis has found a place to make us all consider issues with a smile that often divide us."
